State orders to admit extra students in junior colleges

Mumbai: The education department of Maharashtra ordered junior colleges to admit extra students. The department has also assured to approve extra divisions in the colleges. 20pc extra students,beyond the available seats were admitted after the second merit list. The order came after colleges protested the "arbitrary" allotment of seats in excess of their capacity. City colleges are not happy with the order issued by the education department. Colleges are not also sure about the additional divisions will be aided or unaided. "Our teachers are on strike against the low salary issue. We can not overload our teachers with more students," said Principal of a college. "We are also planning to conduct classes in shifts," added Principal. All the colleges in the city have been asked to admit extra students. A circular in this regard have been circulated by the department of education," said N. B Chavan, assistant director, secondary education, Mumbai region.
